About The Artwork

Wagoner is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts an American small town, man driving a wagon as dog barks and bystander looks on. Anyone who drove a wagon for his livelihood was called a wagoner, wagoneer, or teamster. Horse and mule-drawn wagons were a familiar sight in early America before the advent of motorized vehicles. Typically, wagoners worked long hours for low wages. They hauled all manner of goods: grain, beer, salt, hides, barrels of nails, lumber, and ice, the whiskey deliveries, however, seemed to take a bit longer to reach their destination.
