This work was done very intuitively. I started remembering my trip to a gorilla sanctuary in France when I was 15 as I was painting this. I remember feeling sad for the gorillas because they were behind a fence, yet here we all were, waiting in line to see it. I loved using the cool hues of blue against the hot neon orange.

Claire often uses the word “illustrative” when describing her paintings, because for her, they embody a sense of storytelling. She believes this was born out of her early love of writing as a child. With degrees in advertising and graphic design, she is fixated on the relationships of colors and shapes. Having lived in Maine, Nashville and Los Angeles, she finds herself drawing inspiration from many different landscapes and cultures. She feels that her paintings study the organic flowing design and contrast in nature and society. Hanley has said that “each painting is a recollection of a place in time, rarely drawn from the here and now.” She hopes that her work communicates a sense of inflated and often-times distorted beauty, “the kind that only takes place in a memory.” Hanley has sold and shown her work internationally in galleries and art shows.
