About The Artwork

Globally, sea ice is melting at an alarming rate, and coastal cities, communities and whole ecosystems are being affected and forced to adapt, change or fade away. In the case of the Polar Bear's survival, things remain bleak and uncertain, as the melting polar ice caps leave them stranded and isolated on remaining pockets of frozen land that is soon to be melted. This painting is a heart-felt, deeply personal response to the tragic news of polar bear drownings that have occurred and are escalating in frequency. These excellent swimmers simply have no where left to swim, and their efforts to survive seem in vain. I represented the cities as geometric shapes and predictable patterns, uniform, super-imposed upon the skyline. I used a palette brush to create the sky, buildings and the water and melting ice. Another powerful element to this painting is the red sky, which appears to be burning and to emphasize the harmful and harsh UV rays casting bleak shadows across the landscape. The ice that the polar bear is walking on appears to be thin and melting and the brush strokes intentionally are facing vertically, instead of horizontally, to give the impression and feeling that the polar bear is soon to be submerged in the frail, thin ice. The arrows within the city form also suggest a sinking and heaviness to the scene, adding to the helplessness of the polar bear. The techniques and approaches I used for this painting were: grissaille tonal painting, gestural and impasto brush strokes, and scumbling, as well as layering with gel gloss medium. It is my hope that this painting invokes and instills within the viewer a sense of hope mixed with urgency, as well as an understanding of the severity of the issues of climate change, and the survival of the polar bear, which will affect us all, regardless of race, nationality, creed or geographical/geo-political location.

ARTIST STATEMENT My experience as an artist started at the age of six with cartoon characters and comic books. The notion of heroism created a strong drive in me to make the world a better place. After completing a Bachelor and Masters degree in Environmental Studies from York University, I worked as a visual art instructor, environmental policy and conservation specialist, and youth facilitator; which led me to create environmentally themed artwork in 2006, which I showed at the York University Eco-Art Media Festivals. Since 2007, I have used visual art as a medium to educate and inform children and teens at primary and secondary schools in Toronto and the GTAH. Similarly I have made hundreds of presentations and given workshops on use of non-toxic, biodegradable materials and eco-art processes, in the use of art that inspires people to want to contribute to environmental sustainability in Canada. My strong arts foundation from McMaster University, Sheridan College and Max the Mutt, informed my "environmental art" which helps people learn about the ecological crisis and potential solutions. I studied 3D Animation at Seneca College, with the intention of making animated shorts that explore the narrative behind climate change, species at risk and habitat loss. I am an also an art instructor at the Varley Art Gallery and the Meta4 Gallery. I teach painting, drawing, graphic novels, animation and mixed media to children, youth and adults.
