About The Artwork

"What yesterday was" is an abstract-expressionist painting that shows a black and white contrast with complex transitions. With a strong gesture, the different levels were created, which unite – despite strong contrasts – to an abstract landscape. I wanted to create a painting that has a clear direction and in which a physical impulsiveness is noticeable, which requires decisiveness, which does not tolerate false compromise, which requires energy. Which is able to leave behind bright, but also dark ways. The black rain is not an obstacle, just like the fog, on the way to the light. Rather, everything belongs to the path, is part of the story. Thus, this painting is a metaphor for a consciousness that is awake and knows which way to go, and – despite all the obstacles or traps that life sometimes puts us – cannot be dissuaded. A brave, powerful painting, the sight of which reminds us of our own strength. The artwork can be hung directly on the wall or framed as you like.

I am an abstract painter from Germany. I paint and draw in mixed media on canvas, paper and other surfaces. My paintings are an emerging process, usually beginning with lots of colour, exploring concepts of layering, transformation and ethereal qualities, towards a state of calm, lightness. The world out there is often noisy and restless and life is not always a happy place. We have a lot in our minds. There is this longing for rest, relaxation and harmony, at least in our homes. I hope that my work will give people a moment of pause, awareness and maybe a little joy. More at www.denisemungan.com
