About The Artwork

about the work: "no one is born ashamed. shame cycles are a learned and inherited pattern. some things are constant, you learn: like the sun rising and setting each day, the air being recycled for breath. from generation to generation, we learn to perfectly mimic our caregivers shame. guilt says we’ve done something wrong. shame says we, in our very essence, are wrong. the natural world syncs to the moon and sun cyles, and we have created our own. in our cycle of shame, there is no room for vulnerability, curiosity, or growth. internalized fear keeps us small, believing we are unworthy of connection. disconnect teaches disharmony. all around us are bids for connection. all around us are reminders for oneness; wholeness..like being raised by the sun. there is nothing in the universe that represents oneness more than the sun itself. essential to all life; it is revered across all cultures and religions. we look to the source of all life, the light of the center of the world and we are reminded of clarity: the clearing of all doubt, confusion and fog. as one decides to fully break free of the shame cycle, there is a healing and rebirth for all generations after."

ARTIST STATEMENT: Sam Rueter is a mixed media artist and painter who utilizes the female form to represent the larger unconscious narrative of both the individual and the collective. Rueter forces the viewer to acknowledge the presence of form alongside the fragments that come with being confined to only the bodily facade. By looking beyond the physical form we often hold ourselves to, we formulate a comprehensive, honest look at what lies within the confines of the mind. Her work asks viewers to tap back into the visceral connection, the innate sense of bodily knowing- to actually inhabit and confront our roles. The body can speak volumes when we are willing to become observant and forthright. Through this we can see the unconscious being processed through bodily motion. The way one holds their body in space is an insight to a deeper narrative; an unarticulated language.
