"What's Going On" (2019)
Love & Happiness series. Acrylic and collage on canvas, 20x16 inches. Named after the Marvin Gaye song of the same title.

The Love & Happiness series is a collection of abstract paintings and sculptures that act like a mixtape, with an accompanying soundtrack. In my work, I am often looking for the intersection of cultures and age. The pursuit of love and happiness is a concept universal to humanity, the common threads among all people.

In creating this body of work, inspiration was drawn from music; a curated playlist of lighthearted pop, R&B and soul from around 1975-1985. Visually, the pieces represent a departure from the vintage ethos, offering a reflection of the modern world, today. My inspiration for colors has been coming from the unnatural, man-made world, from sneakers to gadgets, broadcasting and neon lights, etc, etc.

In a way of bridging the gap between generations and cultures, the Love & Happiness series offers an upbeat (and sometimes superficial) perspective on humanity’s age-old tale. Borrowing the sounds of a golden era, the vibe of Love & Happiness carries through the works in rhythm, color and action.

Jim Ford (b.1981) is an interdisciplinary artist and type designer with studios based in Milwaukee. Ford works primarily as a painter and sculptor, using acrylic mixed media, collage ephemera, printed fabrics and household materials for his signature collage paintings. His works are loosely animated, intuitive yet sophisticated; sometimes appearing mechanized in their moiré of color, texture and pattern. Symbolically abstract and subliminally coded, Ford’s themes tend to quips, commentary, inside jokes, and also theory, teachings and musings - reflecting the artist’s beliefs, passions and personal studies. Although many of his artworks are individual and unrelated, Ford works in various series to explore a particular theme or method, thinking laterally. More recently, his work has extended to synthetic mixed media sculptures employing organic patterns and elements of sacred geometry, which he refers to as ‘thought forms’ and ‘transdimensional recordings.’ Aside from his art practice, Jim Ford is an award-winning typeface designer with several original designs including Posterama, Masqualero and Hideout. In his tenure at Monotype and Ascender, he created bespoke typefaces for international brands, publications, devices and video games. Ford is perhaps best known for his keen drawing abilities and storied typefaces.
