This piece was inspired by current events, namely, the Syrian Refugee Crisis. I wanted to portray the children affected by the crisis, to remind people that each child will hold what they see and experience in their heart always. Five years ago, I helped a woman who was a WWII survivor/child refugee bring her story to the page, and eventually to publication. The memoir was crafted from many, many hours of careful interviews. Some of the hardest moments that she had gone through, she just couldn't re-live those again, so I had to piece together the details of what she would remember with my own research. Working on that book was one of the hardest things I've ever done; because for a year, I had to imagine what she experienced in the most minute detail, from sounds to smells to what she saw. I had to basically experience the hardest moments for her so we could get them down on paper and make it all a cohesive story. Today, when I hear the news every morning on the radio, I think of the children and the stories that they will forever carry in their hearts. "What the Children Saw" is my way of coming to grips with the fact that Sonia's story, whose story should never have had to be repeated, is doing just that, before our very eyes.
