About The Artwork

This work grew from a process exploration, involving laying a base layer of black, followed by laying a thick layer of metallic silver paint into which arcs of grooves would be "engraved" into the silver paint while still wet using a toothed silicone implement. The quasi-symmetry in the composition is created from producing the arced grooves in opposite directions from the opposite diagonal corners - top left and bottom right - and intersecting or colliding with one another near the middle. The composition was developed further by the laying of edge shading and corner vignette glazes in order to further draw attention to the center of the work where the opposing field lines collide. Finally, to create a further sense of motion to the field lines, dabs of silver paint were added - like particles or grains caught up by the field lines - and these were then smeared along the arcs using a pointed silicone implement. To add additional depth and accentuation for these "particles" a shadow layer was first created for them - this done by the placement of many blobs of shadow glaze paint, which were then collectively smeared along the field line arcs using a straight wood strip. At the end of the process, a composition had emerged, suggesting the collision of or contact between two separate entities.
