About The Artwork

Felted New Zealand Merino wool and silk fibres, treated with Microseal UV and stain protection. The artwork has been created using individual tufts of hand dyed merino wool fibre - I liken these tufts to brush strokes. These tufts are arranged and layered (up to 8 layers in some areas on this work) and then wet felted to bind them together. Silk fibres are used on the surface of the work, their sheen adding detail, depth and definition. It has taken years of practise achieve optimum control of the process and the fibres during the felting process. "Where the light doesn't reach" I have long been fascinated with the vast landscape hidden in the ground beneath our feet. I am drawn to the places where these hidden secrets are revealed to us at the surface, imagining the mechanisms and events that formed them. Since the beginning of time, we have been motivated to find and utilise the resources and treasures hidden for us to find. “Where the light doesn't reach” seeks to draw the viewers mind to the resources created and concealed in the ground beneath our feet since the beginning of time. To become conscious of the elements used to make the everyday items that we take for granted. One of the wonderful aspects of this medium is the ability to introduce three-dimensional elements such as holes and cavities during the process which draw the viewer to look "into" the work. Artwork is mounted on a ply support and presented in a white tray frame. For hanging, the beautifully designed frame is supplied with both an attached cord and a split baton. Split baton mounts are easy to install, stable, and hold the artwork flush against the wall. The total weight of the framed artwork is 10kg, therefore use of the split baton is advised.

I am a contemporary fibre artist residing in New Zealand, creating abstract artworks. Inspired by a fascination with tiny or hidden details, nuances of light and emotion in our physical and spiritual environment, my work is often informed by my background in engineering. Having always been passionate about expressing my creativity, for the last 5 years I have taken a medium that is traditionally “crafted” and developed my own technique and artistic voice. I find the process of painting and sculpting with unspun fibres fascinating with every new piece that I create. There is an alchemy to the process of transforming wisps of fibre into something with form, structure and strength. Feltmaking is an ancient art form which allows the artist to explore a subject in a unique way. Incredibly fragile at the outset of the process, becoming increasingly tactile and physical as the fibres intertwine and lock together. Becoming fascinated with the fragility and beauty of the fibre art in the early stages of the process, I have recently developed a method of creating and capturing unique, ephemeral fibre art works. These I reproduce as fibre art prints.
