About The Artwork

In this painting, I explore the entanglement of the wild forest and man-made landscape. It's a part of my "Half a Tree" series. It was a central piece in the "Taking A Walk" Exhibition in the library at Giva't Ada, the village where I live. The landscape around the village is a mixture of ancient, wild nature and a man-made agricultural landscape. They are deeply entangled. Sometimes Man wins. Sometimes Nature. The wild oak reservation is surrounded by fields and orchards. Here, a range of the thorny wilderness bursts into the plowed field, thick and unpassable. The compressed dirt road seemed to me to be holding it back, like a leash on a beast. Work process Painted from memory, assisted by reference shots of the particular vegetation that grows there that I took on my cellphone. I tried to paint the mass of thorns as if it were a multilegged, many-headed wild animal. I painted the wheat field over a couple of times. The slightly fake and artificial look of the green rows better conveyed the uncomfortable feeling I had when I saw the real place. I added the puddles for the angular counter shape, and as an excuse to throw in some of the sky-blue, because the whole thing was too grey without it. The layers of oil paint in the forest have rich, textured colors. the sky and dirt are matt and grey-ish. The painting has two metal corners for hanging in the back.

After 14 years of commercial animation, I started painting outdoors with a friend. Over two years of painting trips, a theme emerged: "Half a Tree". This is what I call the trees on the streets of Tel Aviv that are planted too close to a building, so half their canopy gets cut off. In these outings, I discovered many more types of "Half Trees" - various ways in which humans shape nature, especially in agricultural uses. The net-covered fruit trees became an obsession of sorts; they inspire me to play with their shapes. On weekends I fly gliders and see the world from another perspective. Drawing while flying is, well, inadvisable, so I practice remembering what I see. From cloud-base, not very high, I see more types of manmade landscapes. I often paint these experiences from memory, sometimes mixed with imagination. These types of works have less detail and more emotion in them. I explore the shapes that I see: the wild ones, the man-made ones, and what happens when they interact. Bio I was born in the desert, in the bright yellow light of Beer Sheva, Israel. I've lived in the clear mountain air of Jerusalem, in grey Brighton, England, in the heart of the White City of Tel Aviv, and I now live and work in the country, in the village of Givat Ada, surrounded by vineyards and wheat fields. I graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design as an Animator and have worked as a commercial animator and illustrator for about two decades. I'm inspired by the sculptures by Dani Karavan. I grew up and continue to live in his creations. As a small child, I played in the Negev Brigade Memorial, not knowing what it meant, only realizing on a very basic level that someone, a person, an artist, has created this experience for me. I'm also inspired by the many archeological sites all over my country, by great animated movies, and by the impressionist and how they painted their life on the water. Quite a few of the impressionists were avid boaters, and they painted all aspects of the boating life. This inspired me to do the same with gliding. I am a glider pilot and the only woman in my country to have ever achieved a CFIG rating.
