About The Artwork

An experiment at first, the idea of incorporating woodcut prints into the paintings themselves but printmaking is integral to the processes of Michael Rich. Coyote happened after a real-life encounter with a coyote. This black and white painting begins with collaged, original woodcut prints mounted to the canvas, then is layered with gesso and oil paint. An artist known primarily for his use of color, the black and white painting are rare but powerful statements of forceful composition. Black and white, oil and woodcut collage on canvas. A unique, mixed media painting, begun as a collage using original woodcut prints then layered with transparent washes and opaque passages of black and white oil paint. An accomplished printmaker, Michael Rich makes woodcut prints, inspired by the natural surroundings of New England. Leaves, vines, branches and birds nests make their appearances in his printed, graphic work in an abstract way.
