About The Artwork

The two creatures in ‘That Which has Oppressed Me’ are the polarities of Mind, finally arrived at peace: gazing into the same distance. My interest in LeLoup's interpretation of The Gospel of Mary Magdalene was kindled at encountering her image so frequently in the streets of Guanajuato, (Mexico) and extended to the beauty of the Coptic characters, (the original language from which the text was translated) which found their way into this painting. I read: Peter said to him [the teacher] "...tell us: What is the sin of the world?" The Teacher answered: "There is no sin...." These words, (in Coptic) found their way into the ground of this piece many times over. The bodies of the beasts remained empty. Finally, I opened Magdalene's gospel one evening and found my balm: ...the seven manifestations of Wrath, they oppressed the soul with questions: 'Where do you come from, murderer?' and 'Where are you going, vagabond?' The soul answered: 'That which oppressed me has been slain; that which encircled me has vanished; my craving has faded, and I am freed from my ignorance.'" http://unsungstudio.net/blog/2021/3/27/whispers-amp-incantations

I am a bricoleuse – piecing together fragments, keen on the tension of juxtaposition. For me, painting is an act of traversing the gap between thought and matter, building bridges. I seek rhythm in texture, (this feels like intuition) and the articulated edge that becomes letter and language (this is line).    My recent work in mixed media and oils explore abstractions of landscape/bodyscape and human/beast corroborations that are metaphor for the merging of thought and instinct. I find inspiration in poetry, early music and symbolic language systems.
