Wittenham Clumps Red. Painting

Wittenham Clumps site in England (if you look you can see the trees in the centre of the picture) has been a holy place since at least the neolithic period, and druid legends are strongly attached to ıt. There must always be oak trees growing there, I was told by my parents who were born in the country nearby, or misfortune will envelop the whole “Valley of the White Horse”, (the Neolithic complex of landscape ‘art’ sites that goes up the valley for @ 30 kilometres, including the Dorchester cursus, carvings on hillsides, graveyards, tumulus fields etc); oak trees of course were sacred to the druids. Even today I find votive gifts of flowers there, especially on the tumulus of Cunobelinius, an Ancient British King, and many freshly planted small oak trees… I have extensive documentation of votive gifts found in the river Thames nearby (ancient Celtic…Thamesis, “The Dark River/ Isis”)- perfect bronze age axe heads, shields, swords, elaborately decorated with compass designs (from which the designs on the painting are taken), and completely unused…ceremonial objects. Of course the Bronze age people accepted earlier concepts of the surface of rivers and lakes as ‘gates’ to the other world, Annwn, the realm of the Gods and the beautiful but potentially deadly dangerous Sidhe.
