About The Artwork

My paintings explore the longing we have for the things we cannot easily explain. I think a lot about the science of time and space and our physical and emotional experience of it as an entity of nature. I paint in oils - mostly on stretched linen or thin timber panels. This painting, 'Ya'aburne' is painted on a timber panel. English is my only language but for my titles I have chosen words that are not easily translated into English. I have done this because often this highlights feelings that we have within our culture that we can only explain through art. 'Ya'aburnee is an Arabic word. Both sad and beautiful at once (as things often are), this incantatory word means “You bury me”. It is a wish to die before your loved one so you do not ever have to live live without them.

Susie Dureau’s atmospheric paintings are more biographies than landscapes – stories of the natural world intertwined with the human condition, emotion and behaviour. As much great joy as desperate sorrow, the Turneresque storms and seas of light and colour tell a greater story of her desire for human compassion, without ever depicting a single human being. Dureau uses oil on linen or panel, which she prepares herself. ‘It’s almost like summoning the ghosts of masters past,’ she says of dedication to traditional techniques. Dureau holds a Bachelor of Design Hons (Visual Communications), University of Technology, Sydney and a Bachelor of Fine Art, National Art School, Sydney. She lives with her family on the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia.
