About The Artwork

Yogini means the female yoga practitioner. She is also a tantric figure in Newar Buddhist religion with several special manifestations in Kathmandu valley's social culture, like Bajra-Yogini, a female manifestation of Buddha. In this painting, I have used the posture of Vajrayogini where she has her left had under her left leg and right hand holding a kartika knife that can severe heads of huiman being. Her left hand which is supposed to hold a kapala (human skull cup) full of blood that she drinks, is shown here drinking through a wine glass, as a gesture of contemporising the tantric deity's essence in depicting a modern-day woman. It is a worth mentioning here that women drinking wine in public is still a taboo in conservative Hindu societies like in rural Nepal and India.
