About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan in 2011. I hope that the viewer will have a sense of the unexpected, but that the painting will give them grounding. This is oil and wax on canvas. It is unframed but wired for hanging from the back. The painting is signed on the back.

Elaine Rogers was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. Elaine creates abstract paintings using cold wax and oil paint that contemplate color, structure, and metaphor through the process of painting. Her paintings reflect the constant flux in the natural world integrated with personal and current events. Elaine resides in Richmond, Virginia. Her work is in Capital One and the Robins Foundation corporate collections as well as numerous private collections. Elaine earned her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in painting and has exhibited her paintings nationally in group shows. She has had one-person shows in Richmond, Charlottesville, and Norfolk, Virginia. Elaine received a Virginia Museum Professional Fellowship in 1989 and is a former adjunct faculty member at the University of Richmond where she taught studio classes from 2001 through 2014. She has also taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, Collegiate schools, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts studio school. Elaine has been a member of artspace and 1708 Gallery in Richmond,VA. Artist Statement: My paintings begin with colored marks. The colored marks start to formulate into shapes and areas. After a while forms start to emerge and problems present themselves as needing to be solved. I am focusing on something from my experience. Relationships, situations, personal events, and current events are my subjects. I am trying to find visual equivalents of color, shape, and form to represent my experiences.
