This piece is one of a number of abstractions I created during June of 2020, a time when I found myself grappling with two competing desires: 1) to steady myself, buckle down, and lean into a renewed sense of personal responsibility and focus on politics, on justice, and on what a dear friend and mentor has called "care of the world" as a response to grief and anger, and 2) to follow an overwhelmingly escapist desire to simply sail away, to run off to some unimaginable world. I began working on this piece while listening to a particular song—one which I have loved for many years, but which took on new depth and meaning for me in a moment that felt at once like a beginning and an end.
