In der Mythologie hat die Kuh ihre Heiligkeit dem Gott Krishna zu verdanken. Nach seiner Geburt wurde Krishna zum Schutz vor einer drohenden Ermordung in die Obhut einer Hirtenfamilie gegeben und verbrachte als Hirtenjunge viel Zeit mit den Tieren. Mit der Hirtenfamilie, den Milchmädchen (Gopis) und den Kühen wuchs er auf und wurde von ihnen ernährt. Dadurch erreichte die Kuh den Status einer Mutter, die es zu verehren gilt.
