About The Artwork

In this serial, 8 paintings of oil on jute illustrate some of the sentences of the poem. This series refers to a poem written by Jean Genêt in 1942 “Le condamné à mort”.  The writer is a prisoner in a jail in Britain. His cell’s neighbour Maurice Pillorge is a 20 year old murderer who is condemned to the death penalty.  In “Le condamné à mort” Jean Genet expresses his desire and love for the young man, and describes the threatening presence of death.  French actress Jeanne Moreau together with Etienne Daho produced in 2010 a CD where the poem is set to music. The poem is a statement against the death penalty. Jeanne Moreau stood up for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States. In this series, 8 paintings of oil on jute illustrate some of the sentences of the poem.
