About The Artwork

This painting is part of a series titled "Birds of DC," representing the birds that visit my urban backyard at different times of the year. All paintings are done using a combination of watercolors, gouache, and markers. The Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) has a distinctive crest of feathers on its head, which can be raised or lowered depending on its mood. Its overall plumage is gray on the upper parts and white on the underparts, with a rusty-colored patch on its flanks. It has a black patch above its beak, which makes its eyes stand out. This small bird is vocal -- with a distinctive whistle that sounds like "peter-peter-peter." It feeds on insects, spiders, seeds, and nuts and is known for its ability to store food for later use.
