About The Artwork

A gigantic canvas conceived from a motif, variations on a form (an inverted droplet, a face without features, nape of a neck, balloon?), which enables Magali Milkis to arrange aligned two-coloured figures in a perfect calculation of combined tones. The sensation of introspection which the work generates in turn allows other different interpretations. The brilliance of the acrylic and the texture of oil appear in silence. The monumental frames follow one another like the folds of a fan whose fretwork is not just perceived pleat by pleat alone in the motif, but together form a concatenation. Here, similarly, the independence of each work seems to be reinforced in the composition of a series. Apart from the obvious similarities between the paintings, it is not however about serial painting. The line which divides figure from background is in all cases plotted freehand, always different. There are no forms, though there are contrasts and transitions. Two coloured surfaces close and distant held together by an outline. The edge extends as a meeting and separation point between the planes, introducing the differentiation. For a moment we can run the risk of freeing the images from the concepts which hold them fast. Enough to accept what the works are, simply because they are there.
