Not giving it a political turn, but I vividly recall the day I cut my first stencil. I aimed to test a specific hue on a discarded canvas layered with paint. Overwhelmed by fear, I cut a stencil to ensure precision while drawing a small line. The transformative moment occurred when paint applied through the stencil altered everything for me. The joy of peeling off the stencil to reveal that singular line fueled years of continued exploration. I remain captivated because experimentation has consistently nurtured my interest. The choice to work with a stencil initially stemmed from fear, acknowledging my limitations. Abstraction became a prevalent practice post-World War Il, as artists distanced themselves from political agendas. It's a mindset acknowledging the inability to change, opting for detachment to exist—a selfish yet genuine act, free from pretense.

Naqsh Raj is an artist, educator and a mother, she also taught at the Art & Design department at Nottingham Trent International College, UK. She has a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore. Served in Pakistan as an Art educator for ten years at Comsats University, Islamabad. Naqsh believes in the strong connection between visual aesthetics and ethics, which are in a continuous process of reform. Her ongoing work is a union of mechanical and manual methods of painting, repeating a mundane technique for imprint making with human hands is the symbolism in her imagery. Possessing an empty space through relentless exertion has been her prime interest and embracing imperfection is a natural part of her current art practice. Naqsh is also a member of Primary, an artist-led contemporary visual arts organisation based in the United Kingdom.
