Painting, Wax on Wood

Ships in a Crate
Inspired by traditional still-life paintings in which the skull, and once-living flowers, symbolize the transitory nature of life. Although the skull personifies death, it appears animated in this painting. I use encaustic (beeswax with pigment) for its translucent qualities, and its natural propensity to create distortions in the process. These distortions add an element of chance, and are often more interesting than anything I might have planned.

Born 1967, California. Currently teaching at several universities. I enjoy lecturing and traveling. Since 2001 I have developed works based on various themes, such as the mortal sins, cautionary tales, a boxing as a metaphor for the creative process. I have worked in a variety of media, from watercolor and acrylic paint, to oil painting, encaustic (wax and pigment) and drawing with China markers (wax crayons).
