Northern German Garden (Norddeutscher Garten), Edition 1/10 Painting

The work is inspired by the artist’s German poem Norddeutscher Garten whose German as well as English text is found at http://www.ottolaske.com/documents/German-Complete.pdf. It reflects the artist’s teenage memory of growing up in a Northern German farmhouse built of red brick in 1821, and located in a large garden full of fruit trees, near fields and a small river. Around the central image of the enormous entrance intended for humans and animals alike, of a traditional farmhouse, the work (following the poem) lays out the paths accessible from the house leading into the surround. The work is drawn from the boy’s memory of the garden’s setting in a flat landscape overarched by an enormous sky. Around the central image of the house entrance, it shows the many paths he came and went in search of himself as a young person. The combination of western and northern skies overhead reflects his memory of the Northern German landscape, whose skies are often gray and stormy but, in the boy’s memory, equally sheltering. The work is printed on Hot Press Fine Art Smooth Bright White paper (an acid free, 100% cotton rag media with a bright textured finish, yielding an extremely high color gamut and black density). It is signed and numbered by the artist, accompanied by a CoA, and shipped without hanging hardware, in a very sturdy tube protected against folding and puncture.
