About The Artwork

The work is inspired by the artist’s German poem Park, an acoustic reading of which is found at http://www.ottolaske.com/poems/p_g_aam_park.mp3. It is a discordant work as befits the poem itself. To capture the experience of the artist, of walking in a park in his German homeland and finding himself imagine those ‘who only yesterday were singing massed under a heap of leaves’, the artist employs garish colors with an overlay of black strokes rising from the bottom. As the work intimates, the poetic I struggles with its nightmarish experience in which blood ‘pours forth from heartbreak, seeping into a seam of mist’, thereby turning the park into a morgue (‘Totensaal’). As a counterforce there arises a notion of peaceful sleep -- ‘gone the torment, forgotten the court sentence’ of those who were murdered, although the poem’s existential conclusion remains dire: ‘strangers (are) forever all who meet’. The work is printed on Hot Press Fine Art Smooth Bright White paper (an acid free, 100% cotton rag media with a bright textured finish, yielding an extremely high color gamut and black density). It is signed and numbered by the artist, accompanied by a CoA, and shipped without hanging hardware, in a very sturdy tube protected against folding and puncture.

I am an experimental artist working in digital painting, graphics, abstract photography, animation, and textile design. My work is abstract in the sense that I invent shapes, colors, and textures without reference to representational concerns. Working entirely digitally, I consider the boundaries between domains of visual art as entirely permeable. Since I work with a large variety of tools aided by a mastery of controlled random, the outcome of my composition and design processes are unpredictable; their results often straddle the line between established visual-art categories. The majority of my visual work is found on SaatchiArt where my musical compositions and German and English poetry are found at www.ottolaske.com. Outside of my artistic work, I am the founder and director of the Interdevelopmental Institute (IDM), a graduate-level teaching institute for those interested in adult-developmental thinking and research.
