Reared in Fire No. 1 (Sprachschmiede), Edition 1/10 Painting

The work is inspired by the artist’s German poem Sprachschmiede (language smithy) an acoustic reading of which is found at http://www.ottolaske.com/poems/p_g_asg_sprachschmiede.mp3. It is a portrait beyond likeness of the artist in which his eyes appear at the top of a black frame in whose middle subtle flames rise upward from an obscure crossing of path telling the story of his life. In the poem, ‘fire’ is both the fire of smithies his ancestors worked in, and the fire of passion ‘burning on paper’ of his own life. It is as if the artist were here looking for a point of view outside of himself from which to view his life objectively, almost outside of history. In the austerity of expression, the work suggests the distance the artist has travelled, both from his birth in a province now part of a different nation state than the one he was born in, and from his own youth. The work is printed on Hot Press Fine Art Smooth Bright White paper (an acid free, 100% cotton rag media with a bright textured finish, yielding an extremely high color gamut and black density). It is signed and numbered by the artist, accompanied by a CoA, and shipped without hanging hardware, in a very sturdy tube protected against folding and puncture.
