About The Artwork

"English" Judith, a beautiful Jewish widow who is seduced by Holofernes, the Assyrian general who is about to destroy the city of Betulia, enters with him in his tent and, taking advantage of the fact that he has been unconscious from having drunk too much, beheads him with his own sword and flees with his head in a basket, bag or saddlebag. In the artistic representations the figure of an old servant appears helping Judith.
