About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by my passion for mid-century lighted signage and my background as a graphic designer. I take reference images on location. There's a story as to how I came across this set of signs. I happened to come across this signage duo by accident, meaning that there was literally an accident that shut down I-75 both ways when I was traveling. Directed off the nearest ramp, we followed everyone else who seemed to know where to go even though there were no detour signs. A few miles up the road was this abandoned building and the signs. We couldn't stop at the time, but on the way home we went back to shoot images. I have no idea what happened to make that arrow sign so mangled, but it was that way for a long time shown. I thought it was a fun piece of nostalgia and hoped to share it as a keepsake of Americana. I executed the work in watercolor. I love the way I can build up the textures and color in that medium.
