I have always been interested in the life of those who live detached from the Western World. My most cherished memories are linked to holidays in the African outland known as “the bush”, where your day starts with the sun rising and ends with it setting. In this series I wonder through South East Asia photographing communities who live detached from the fabric of the modern world. Over the past decade photographers have focused on the urbanisation of humanity. Modernity will soon lead to cultures and communities adopting a different life for themselves and their family. and so in this series I focus on those communities which will possibly not exist in the future, for better or worse. The process involved shooting only analog, focusing on experiencing the world of these people first. Photographing was only a byproduct of my desire to engage with the world through visual documentation of my experiences. There was no online research involved or specific idea in mind. The only requirement I gave myself was to travel on public transport, never flying once in a country. Through the creation of this work, I became increasingly aware that the life of those depicted in this series is one of humbleness and nobility. A life not diluted by commodities, excess and lust. A behaviour of appreciation, thought and understanding. A life worth being proud of.
