The project “Pen-UP” chooses a specific way to present it in the context of pop art. In this sense, the production encompasses visual codes belonging to different levels of both popular and higher culture. The composition is based on various images of ballpoint pens which were in use during the period 1950 through 1980. When the ballpoint pen is being turned up or down, the kinetic images show in turn a picture of a woman, or a man in different stages of stripping (or, alternately, covering). These images could also represent cars, ships, airplanes, or, even soldiers on duty in front of Buckingham Palace in London moving hither and thither in a funny manner. Ballpoint pens of such kind were being smuggled in Bulgaria during the time of socialism mimicking Western models of pens, holographic cards, and other similar mass products. They were highly valued in the mass culture and even turned into an indelible part of the then-popular “city folklore”. Their influence upon the language of serious art imposed a sort of a peculiar “visual dialect” in an original new context.
