About The Artwork

You've been to places. Maybe a lot of places. But can you name a place that doesn't know loneliness? In case you do, tell me about it. I want to go there. But right now I got to stay here, 'cause my physician said I'm too lonely to go anywhere. They say, loneliness is only known by the lonely people. But I don't know. I guess, anything between the Heart-broken Hotel and outright boredom is loneliness. That's not what my psychologist told me, but what life has taught me over the years. Now, I'm going to tell you my story. This is not my town, although I've been living here for as long as I can remember. I know nobody. I'm nobody. Everyday, I meet the same serious-looking business people, and the same cross-dressed teenagers with headphones. When they see me, they just look away. When those people meet me on the subway, across the seat, they put their feet, in red sneakers, or brown leather shoes on my side of the seat. And they look away. Have these people ever learned manners? What kind of jerk, in red sneakers! They all look like Andreas Lubitz. To my mind, there's no doubt they're all Lubitz wannabees. But at least that bastard Lubitz went to see a psychologist. Everyday, I watch the same serious-looking business people coming out of the subway and going into the grayish boxes of office buildings; and the same cross-dressed teenagers with headphones disappearing in the street corners covered with graffiti. A dreadful feeling arises whenever I meet those guys. And I don't ever feel curious about what they do to make a living. Everyday I see new immigrants making phone calls with their cell phones on the subway. They just talk and talk like there's no tomorrow. And they talk so loudly that they risk being arrested. Everyday, I see the same guys sitting on the floor next to the exit at the subway station begging for money, with empty coffee cups in front of them. For the last few weeks, there was a Chinese lady in her late 40s often sat there at the exit of the subway station at Queens. I would take a look at her face whenever I go by, but she would quickly lower her head. She seemed to have recognized me, or was too shy to be stared at being caught off-hand kind of way. Her face was colorless and fragile, even looked somewhat familiar, although I dismissed that possibility almost at once, as I didn't think anyone I knew could end up living like this: begging for coins in a subway station. I saw her several times there. Once a white guy about her age sat at her side and was holding her shoulders and they were kissing each other. I can't help thinking about what kind of future was waiting for them, and what kind of family life they would end up with living. And the train of my thoughts never got very far before sadness would set in and grow stronger and stronger.
