A Vase of Flowers, Brodiaea and Agapanthus - Limited Edition of 20 Photograph

This image is one of three 'A Vase of Flowers' pictures made during the isolation of lockdown. For me this period offered the space to separate myself from the distractions of everyday life. Time seemed to slow down allowing me to fully immerse myself in the fabrication of the images. Time is a pivotal theme in my Still Life series, whether depicted symbolically by the placement of an inherited pocket watch, by a flower in the first stages of decay, or by the juxtaposition of plants from different seasons. Inspired by the Dutch and Spanish 17th painters, I create my own compositions which may incorporate objects from personal or universal histories. The inclusion of small animals and insects refers to the living cycle of nature. I sketch out alternative potential structures for my images, annotating possible camera angles, symmetry, depth and light , focal points. I then experiment, research and evaluate the evolving images. Once I have exhausted this process, I explore post production alternatives producing & comparing different print versions, papers and scales until I reach a conclusion and the picture takes on its own identity.
