About The Artwork

Jenima a photographic series by Lynn S.K. 2014/2015 Giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White 310gr, premium quality delivering. Comes with signature & numbered certificate of authenticity. I was born in Algeria in december 1986. I lived there until I was seven. Because of the civil war, my parents and I moved to France. The following years, we came back there for the holidays, until I was 10. Then my parents stopped bringing me with them. For a long time, memories came back to me like old dreams. Memories of Boumerdes, the city of my childhood, and the « Champ Manoeuvre » district, in Alger. However, it took some time for the mental process to turn into into a geographical path. In october 2014, I went back to Algeria for the first time after 17 years away.  In Alger, I met B., the nurse of one of my aunts who passed away. She talked to me about her mother and her family in the suburbs of the Jijel. I asked her if I coluld come with her, she said yes. In Jenima, small village in the wilaya of Jijel, I lived in a farm, without gaz or drinking water. The parents of B. were there, and also the sons, their wifes, and the girls of the family who were still single. My arabic was quiet bad, and so was their french, but still, we became close very quickly. I knew that they had been very close to terrorism during the 90's, because the region of Jijel was affected a lot. The men that algerian people call the « terros » always stole their grounds, chickens, cows. They threatened to kill the men, and to rape the women. B. and her family were too far from the city, and so too far for any protection. They lived in fear, eating once a day, and sleeping rarely. However, life came back quickly in Mohamed S.'s farm. As he took care of the fields, and his sons went downtown to sell the eggs, I stayed with the women and children. The family won something like 10 000 dinars (60 euros) a month and yet, they adopted me. It's that kind of daily life I wanted to talk about in these photographs.
