About The Artwork

I was driving along Texas Highway 21 in a rural area, when I saw this rusted heap of an abandoned pick-up truck. It was compelling in a charming way and drew me into it. This image evoked complex emotions on my part: sadness, sympathy, respect. This rusted heap which no one wanted had its own poignant beauty. I wanted to preserve it before it crumbled into the landscape. I'm not sure which influences to attribute it to, for it is unique in my repertoire. Many of my images such as this one have a painterly quality. This technique has been frowned upon by critics in the past, but I use it if the image calls for it. In general my influences come from Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, Georgia O'Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, Imogene Cunningham, Edward Weston, and others. Rather than emulating them, I strive to give each image its own identity. To me, this image represents the idea that many people discard their goals when their goals no longer serve them. Something that was once precious is not worth saving. But the old truck also illustrates that beauty is everywhere if you look for it. My hope for you is that this image will teach you to find beauty in surprising places and hold it to your heart.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
