About The Artwork

I'm a documentary photographer. Whatever I show it's nothing that really happened. In december 2013 I was in Jerusalem looking for God, visiting the holy places, but feeling I've never been so far from the Mystery. I decided to close myself inside my apartment in Jerusalem in order to think with various objects taken from the city. On my studio table there were stones, fruit, soil, and the head of a lamb. At that time, I had never seen anybody dead. I was afraid of the physical death and I decided I was going to investigate it through that lamb. Or maybe I wanted to be able to fully live a mourning ritual, like I was never allowed before. I closed myself in this apartment for few days, following the decomposition of the lamb. While death was proceeding to destroy the body, spontaneously I started painting it, putting perfume on it, creating some sort of ritual to accompany the animal through death. The same happened in Palestine with a dead shark. But that time the voice spread all other Nablus and many people came to visit me to see the artist and the shark. I decided to document every stage of what happened because that's what I always do when something important is happening. Only one year later, showing my work in New York City, I heard for the first time "But this is an altar!" I didn't know what I was doing before.
