About The Artwork

Approaching the Arch in St Louis by Eero Saarinen I faced one question: 'How do I make a photograph of this massive thing?!' I calmed myself and returned to what I know best: shoot into surfaces, focus on edges, and find out what happens when you think, well, small. What happened was a lovely mix of sharp and soft in this brilliant reflective surface: of initials and names etched in when no one was looking, of reflections of soft sky and one tree, to counterpoint the welded edge which we never think of when we take in the broader view. And that's the point: sometimes focusing on the tiniest of details can make for a more imaginative story. And I imagine this as a kind of ode to the great architect who conceived this sculptural architecture, Eero Saarinen. This image is printed on archival cotton rag paper with a matte finish, which dramatically highlights the textures and colors. There is a 2 inch border all the way around in addition to the image size listed. A compelling way to frame this image is to trim off the borders and then float the borderless print on a white matboard with generous borders which meet a simple frame.

Larry Simon takes his inspiration from seemingly everyday objects, surfaces and scenes to create dreamlike narratives shrouded in a sense of the unknown: the Inner World residing in our subconscious--a place where we cannot fill in all the blanks. As a photographic artist, he often works with a blend of sharp and soft focus, presenting his work in photo collage form or as digital prints. A constant roamer, Larry Simon is based in Chicago. Influences: Gerhard Richter, Saul Leiter, Haruki Murakami, Alfred Brendel
