About The Artwork

My artwork is driven by my obsession with light, space, and color and their ability to effect a person's emotions. Many of my images are made using photographs of the empty corners of a room. Think for a moment about what a makes a room: A room, or space, is defined by its borders, or lack thereof. Walls contain, create, and alter a space. Where walls meet, corners and edges form. These corners are the signifiers of a finite space. I photograph these corners and edges, these finite spaces, in order to better understand space and architecture. I then manipulate them through multiple exposure techniques, or by digital overlay methods. In doing so time and space collapse, and in essence the absolute qualities of these corners are destroyed. The resulting images often play tricks with the mind. They create their own corners and define new spaces; spaces that shift depending upon the focus of the viewer. These spaces seem to optically alter their own architecture all while containing the original essence of contained space. ----- ----- ----- Throughout my life, my primary inspiration has been music. Music from all time periods seem to seek to create, define, and explain emotions. Then, the Color Field painters of America as well as those who could be classified as Lyrical Abstractionists attempted to distill these ideas into visual compositions. Additionally, the synesthetic color theories of Wassily Kandinsky, Rimsky Korsakov, and Antonin Scriabin have played a large role in my studies. ----- ----- ----- I believe it is not necessary for the viewer to understand the intention of the artist and that the most honest, and personal results will surface over time. As an artist you can never ask too much of a medium, or from a viewer. My artwork is not merely visual; it is a spiritual and meditative experience best when observed openly, (and if possible) separate from artistic education and archives of historical reference. Do not just look at the work, but try to understand it as you react to it: meditate on it, hear it and feel its vibrations as if it were an abstract sound. ----- ----- ----- Physically speaking, photography is a medium of light. The creation of an image is only possible when some type of light is able to be recorded onto some light sensitive material. While the process may seem incredibly mechanical, almost cold, objective, inhumane in nature, photography's ability to record the finest of subtle tone shifts is unparalleled. Equally, the printing of a photograph is an equally mechanical process which can accurately produce the smallest differences in tone. This acute and ingrained hyper-sensitivity to light makes it the perfect tool for when light is of the foremost focus of your work.
