About The Artwork

Having made the tree change to the country, this was a huge inspiration for this series of works, predominantly shot in and around the Macedon Ranges and more specifically, the Black Hill reserve. Amid a hot and dry summer, a bushfire ripped through the reserve, dramatically altering the landscape I had grown accustomed to shooting. This work celebrates all of what I experienced in there, from the damp and misty winter mornings to the twig cracking heat and dryness the day before the bushfire, and the ash-laden greyness of its aftermath.  Creatively, my style continues to evolve and flex the boundaries of what is traditionally considered to be photography. I also rediscovered colour. Something I had clearly avoided for many years. It's like being back in art college again. Ideas begin in the sketchbook, before being translated into often painstakingly detailed studio or location photography of every element necessary to the final image. This will of course be the main subject matter, alongside minuscule or often overlooked textures, patterns, reflections and found objects that give context to the overall piece. Only once all of the individual content has been shot can the creative and architectural collage process begin. This can take hours or days, depending on seemingly no reason. There is no formula to the work, but the final shape, colour, composition and balance, without the photography, for me just isn't possible. It is a fluid process that can often end up bearing little or no resemblance to the initial sketches, and there is a quiet, often humorous ambiguity to the final constructions that invites the viewer to draw conclusions based on their own experiences and visual reference. I am far more interested to hear the unique and widely varied interpretations of others than I am inclined to instruct the viewer on what i believe they should see. That’s the good stuff. The stuff I’m truly interested in. The final images are printed on archival photographic paper, and are single editions. Every piece is an original one-off and high resolution files are destroyed. The work comes alive as the size increases and the more you look at it, the more new stories continue to develop.

I am a mixed media artist, originally from Manchester, now based in rural Victoria, just outside of Melbourne. Having studied art and been immersed in the photographic medium throughout my career, my work continues to explore that medium past its boundaries of controversy. Creatively, it is about simultaneously destroying the perceived realism and truth of the photographic image and combining that with the freedom and imagination of drawing by hand. My style is not about choosing one medium over the other, I’m really beginning to understand how photography sits within my creative vision and the relationship it forges with other art forms. I feel finally, that I’m able to draw into the photograph, rather than onto it’. I am currently working with pen and ink, camera, paint, charcoal and paper. All works are signed limited edition archival prints. Thanks for stopping by.
