About The Artwork

Italy is a visual feast. This platinum print, which is in several museum and private collections, was made from a 1976 negative. The scene is on a hill overlooking a small vineyard near Alba in the Piemonte region of Italy. The grape grown is known as "nebbiolo" and is ready for harvest in the Fall when the fog (La Nebbia) usually rolls into the region. This scene is of a table with chairs found on the farm. It captures the mood of autumn in northern Italy. The uploaded image does not completely capture the subtlety and range of the tones in the actual platinum print which is on 100% rag paper. It is signed and numbered by the artist. Please note that the 11x14 inches size includes the mount. The actual size of the print is 4.5 x 6.5 inches. It is small and intimate print. I will sell the mounted print in a simple wooden frame included in the price. I often choose to print the images using the platinum-palladium process rather than standard gelatin silver printing. The platinum-palladium prints are on hand-coated papers. The printed image is embedded in the fibers of the print with a long tonal range unique to this process. The larger gelatin silver images have rich blacks and clear whites and make a bolder statement compared to the small and subtler platinum and palladium prints. Over the years I have used various photographic formats and processes to create photographic art. I now use digital technology to produce archival inkjet prints both in color and monochrome. Some recent work has used an ultra-wide angle lens to create circular and distorted images of well-known Italian sites.

COMMENTS ABOUT MY PHOTOGRAPHIC ART “Hyman is able to photograph things that have become visual cliches and make them fresh and see-able again. His work has a beautiful spaciousness, and evanescence, as well showing an appreciation for the geometry of places.” Kate Dobbs Ariail, The Independent Weekly, Durham NC, November 27, 1991 “David Hyman brings us the charm of Europe in exquisitely composed platinum prints.” Michele Natale, The News and Observer, Raleigh NC, September 26, 2004 “His platinum palladium printing is nothing short of exquisite, possessing an almost luminescent quality” Juror’s Statement – Diana Hooper Bloomfeld, 2006 Juried Photographic Exhibition, The Fine Arts League of Cary MAJOR AWARDS BLUE RIBBONS (FIRST PRIZE) in Professional Photography, North Carolina State Fair, 1980, 1981, 1983.
