Limited Edition Print "Barge, 3/3" This is the last of three prints available in this size. Image size 24 x 24 inches with 3" un-printed white border This print is part of a series called "The Floating World" bringing together the aesthetic of 18th century woodcuts and the unconventional beauty of the modern maritime industry. I compose the finished work from multiple photographic captures of the architecture, textures, weather and other elements of a particular place, blending them to invoke the dynamic process of decay and renewal. I started this series to pay homage to 19th Century Japanese print master Yoshitoshi. His prints functioned both as high art and as popular social commentary and combined themes of rhapsodic beauty, sensual life and political upheaval – all of which seem to exist in equal proportion right now, give or take a few rhapsodies. In bringing together archetypal elements of traditional Japanese woodblock with an edgy sometimes apocalyptic subject matter, the Floating World prints anchor the uncertainty of our age in a framework that is both unsettling and familiar. This print is meticulously proofed and printed on Hahnemühle German Etching, using archival pigment inks rated to last for 100 years or more. The prints come with a certificate of authenticity verifying the edition number and the edition size. These prints are traditionally numbered and signed in light pencil with the number on the left and the signature on the right, just below the image. They are intended to be matted with an approximately 1/2 inch space all around to reveal the signature, but can be cropped to the edge of the image if desired. Prints are sold unframed. Due to the difference in monitor settings on various devices I cannot guarantee that the color match of what you receive will be exact compared to what the listing shows.

Throughout my work I explore impermanence as it occurs in the urban landscape and in nature. My architectural prints and mixed media pieces focus on the radical reshaping of the built landscape through gentrification and de-industrialization. As we are confronted with change and our relationship to it, I am interested in the question of how much of the past we value and hold onto, and how much we let go to make the future our “now.” My work lives on the edge between nostalgia and accommodation, mediating through the elements of surface and iconic structure to a conversation about history, identity and sense of place. I have been a calligrapher and letter form artist for much of my professional art career, creating well known brandmarks for film, books and packaging. I have created custom typographic identities for Kitty Kelly, Clive Barker, Naomi Judd, and Anne Rice among others, and movie titling for Dreamworks and Walt Disney. As a fine artist I bring my passion for mark making and the architecture of letter forms into the abstract realm. I have a calligrapher's subtle sense of surface and texture, and incorporate calligraphic mark making into many of my pieces. I use photography, digital composition, printmaking, mixed media and collage, shifting as needed to suit my subject matter. I embrace new media and the infinite ways in which the analog and the digital can be shaken, stirred and poured into a new creative form.
