About The Artwork

The third installment in the 'Der Himmel über Berlin' project, this artwork contributes to a series of four photographs meticulously composed in the city of Berlin in 2004, subsequently undergoing development and printing processes in London. In resonance with the thematic essence of the seminal image, 'Aufgeloste Gebaude,' the artwork assumes the role of an art documentary project. It engages responsively with a confluence of influences deeply entwined with the oeuvre of German artists spanning music, literature, and cinema. Simultaneously, it assumes the nuanced role of documenting the cultural and social metamorphoses ingrained within the dynamic fabric of Berlin. Captured against the backdrop of what remains of the Berlin Wall post its fall, this photograph acquires a distinctive historical weight. In a personal recollection, the artist, having been 10 years old during the fall of the wall in 1989, vividly recalls the televised imagery of people crossing borders—a potent symbol of both peace and violence etched into collective memory. Upon visiting the city, the artist encountered the tangible remnants of this historical monument, now a prominent tourist attraction. The photograph, in particular, unveils a massive graffiti text, 'Berlin '90,' accompanied by the signatures of individuals inscribed in a straightforward anonymous font. Despite the wall's multilayered textual and artistic interventions, this simplistic yet robust text drew the artist's attention, symbolizing the subtle yet enduring presence of three individuals. Consequently, this piece becomes a contemplation on the interplay of time, history, and languages, reflecting on the interactions of individuals with historical narratives. Employing the medium of 35mm color photography, this image assumes an almost black-and-white tonality, a consequence of the prevailing overcast and dim lighting conditions on that particular day.

Italian artist based currently in London. Her artistic practice investigates and questions the persuasive power of the image and of the visual language. Her body of work incorporates intimate yet universal experiences such as loneliness, abandonment, fear for emotional nakedness and failure. In touching on these topics, she aims to create a collision between opposite languages: the unreal and the imaginary, the document and the oneiric, the personal memory and the collective, aiming to trigger reactions by invoking primal and visceral emotions. She employs the photographic medium to create visual access to the many different readings of existence. Her work often addresses elements of sexuality, mysticism, body language and nature, to create a tense narrative that provokes and relives at the same time.
