About The Artwork

I have complex feelings about this portrait of a woman engrossed in her cell phone as she walks through the grand hall of Grand Central Station in New York City, 2019. The more I photograph individuals on the street, the more I notice them tethered to their cell phones. I, too, often find myself ensnared by my cell phone. Yet, I can't help but interpret the emotion on her face as she gazes at her phone. It's not just a reaction to the information she's absorbing; it's the expression of someone fully immersed in an experience designed to control and direct every aspect of her life, from her emotions to her hopes, desires, and dreams. Every thought and feeling is influenced by the commodities presented through that small silicon chip by unseen power institutions. And when I say unseen, I mean completely hidden. Her body language suggests an unconscious submission to the forces behind that phone. On the other hand, this candid portrait reminds me of the idealized beauty found in classical Greek sculptures of women. I wonder if my male perspective unconsciously influenced the composition. Why did I choose this particular color palette during post-production? Did I unconsciously arrange the shot to give the surrounding elements an ethereal quality? Why did I opt for a profile view? How significant was it to include her backpack, and what compelled me to photograph it? Is my male perspective at play here, or was I projecting someone else from my life? Was I compensating for not seeking permission, or was I genuinely documenting what a woman like her looked like in the early 21st century, so that someone like her in a distant future might know how people looked millennia ago? On a different note, the woman in this photograph reminds me of the Venus of Willendorf, but this is how she appears 25,000 years later. Here she is, documented - not a representation carved from stone - despite all my subjective biases and limitations.

www.MA9.co Fine art photography by Marco Aurelio. ARTIST STATEMENT I photograph the individual on the street to create site-specific visual ethnographies. I also photograph still-life as a way of exploring the beauty of design and form in the natural world. BIO Born and raised at the foot of the South American Andes within a family of generational farmers, I was exposed to native oral traditions, pre-Columbian indigenous art and cosmologies, magical-realism experiences, and the sociopolitical dynamics of the region. I earned a Liberal Arts degree from New York University, which encompassed studies in European history, anthropology, and Western philosophy. Starting as a self-taught photographer, I enhanced my craft by attending courses at The International Center of Photography and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Following a strong academic curiosity, I ventured into archaeology and anthropology at The City College at CUNY and deepened my understanding of writing, music history, and anthropology at Columbia University. Journeys through photojournalism and portrait photography, combined with interests as varied as ontology, Eastern philosophy, physics, and the metaphysical elements in the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges, continue to shape and inform my fine art photography practice. Today, New York City is both my home and a creative sanctuary.
