About The Artwork

Broken Cross Description “Broken Cross” is in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. It is very large, on top of a promontory at the edge of the sea. There were people standing under it, but I wanted the cross to be in isolation, to enhance its separation from humanity. I couldn’t find the exact meaning online, but then art doesn’t need to have an exact meaning. It could symbolize the decline of Christianity and religion in these modern times, or Christ broken at the crucifixion, or a lack of faith in humanity. In any case, I found it to be profoundly sad and beautiful. Public art is important for many reasons. It literally puts art where the public can relate to it. People may not like it – as in the case of the 51-foot-tall “Male/Female” sculpture by Jonathan Borofsky at the entrance to Baltimore’s Penn Station, which totally detracts from the station’s elegant Beaux-Arts architecture, in my opinion. (I was living in Baltimore when the sculpture was installed.) Public art may be the only experience with art that many people have, even if it is an object of contempt and ridicule. Regarding major influences, Michangelo’s “David” was originally public art, but after suffering damage it was later moved indoors to L’Accademia in Florence. It has recently been restored and the lighting re-done. I was fortunate to see “David”. The experience was life-changing Finally, Jeff Koons’ “Balloon Dog” resonates with me. Unfortunately, one of the copies was recently shattered when a viewer tapped her finger on it. Art, like life itself, can be fragile. May you have the moments to engage with public art and create your own meanings. As I like to say, “Art is life: live it!”

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
