About The Artwork

‘I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description (hard core pornography) and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see It, and the motion picture involved in this case is not that’. Potter Stewart J. Jacobellis v Ohio (1964), in judgment on the film ‘The Lovers’. In the time, or era, of the judgment of Stewart J, there were no obscenity laws. When I say ‘laws’ I mean, no State Legislation pertaining to the subject, the Government had not yet regulated ‘obscenity’. Influence in, and of the nude in art had historically relied upon moral codes that were arrived at via Ecclesiastic laws and were enforced through the Church. The waning of Church power left a void, which, the State has filled. ‘Censored’, presents as a ‘full stop’, or summation to a body of work titled ‘I Know It when I see It’ which constitutes a series of female nudes. Drawing on and from, responding to historical nude female paintings and contemporary Photographer Bill Henson’s series of teenage nudity. This series was ‘Censored’ by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and the exhibition was cancelled. ‘I Know It when I see It’. Archival lambda digital master print s from an original silver gelatin print.

Kristin Hatland is an exhibiting artist with a Bachelor of Applied Arts Visual. A component of her vision and motiviation is informed by her study of logic (cause and effect) while simultaneously applying a normative ethic. The blending of the two philosophical theories provides artistic tension, blurring idealistic expression, driving her fascination with abstract art. An award winning artist, she has exhibited at the Shutter Room in Whangarei as part of the group exhibition Metapherein, was part of the selection for The Exposure Award launched by the Louvre in Paris, and the bastille from her Plato’s Cave series was amongst the finalists and winners included in a tour of New Zealand’s museums and art galleries coordinated by the Wallace Arts Trust. Her artworks are held in collections in New Zealand and overseas
