This photograph was taken on the Mont Chauve, a large mountain behind Nice. I have always been drawn to roads going nowhere, but here my eye was brought to the large cloud spanning the horizon which confronted the road turning away to the right. Digital manipulation changed the pale cloud against a pale blue vault into the rather intimidating mass shown here, which, in fact somewhat mirrors the image of France herself. The blue sky has become a deep violet black and the context is one of complex drama yet without menace.
At the top of the Mont Chauve you can find a kind of fortress, and some former Nazi blockhouses which maintain a very long view over Nice and the surrounding valleys. I am informed that in former times the Templars inhabited caves deep inside the mountain, and that it is still possible to find your way inside and see their relics. Who knows what other complex flavours colour this place?
