About The Artwork

'Copper Beech' is part of my ongoing project entitled "Savernake Light'. Of all the elements that inform my work, light has to be the most important. It is the narrative or voice of an image. It describes the scene and it infects the mood of an image. And light doesn't always have to be dramatic. In this image, the soft flat light has allowed a depth to the picture that would have been lost in strong sunlight. I was attracted to the shapes of the trees and the strong line of bracken that underlines the composition. To bring out the colour, tone and detail of this image, I chose to print this on one of my most favourite fine art papers. Hahnemuhle Photo Rag is the perfect partner for this image. It is a sophisticated fine art paper that allows the subtle qualities in the image to take centre stage. This is a large print that would enhance a variety of interior spaces, in your home, your office or your special place. The print area measures 24 inches x 30 inches with a two inch white border on all sides to facilitate framing. It is carefully rolled in acid free tissue paper and ships with a pair of white cotton gloves for handling prior to framing. It is also accompanied with a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Ever since I heard the music from 'Peter and the Wolf' during my childhood, I have been fascinated by forests and woodland. That piece of music had a profound affect on me as a child. It was packed with emotion and it conjured up some strong images in my mind. And from a photographers perspective, the forest offers a challenge that has engaged me for many years. Composition, colour and light all play a major role in crafting my images. And there is no better environment in which to work where these three elements come together. All have a pivotal role in creating an image that strongly conveys the feelings that I have when working in the forest. I live close to the Savernake Forest, near Marlborough in the county of Wiltshire, UK. I call it my spiritual home and its an area that I find ever more engaging. Most people would consider it a static environment, but its characteristics are far more fluid. The changes are subtle and slow to evolve, but very noticeable with regular visits. New growth, fallen trees, the seasons and the changing weather all conspire to alter the look and feel of the forest. My commitment to the forest is based upon my desire to capture its many moods and its almost toxic ambience. It offers a myriad of challenges and opportunities that I find inspiring. N.B. I don't offer my work framed for a number of reasons. My images are generally large. Framing adds considerable weight and can substantially add to the cost of shipping. A framed artwork behind glass, even when heavily protected, can easily get damaged. And most importantly, clients generally like to make the final choice on framing based upon personal taste.

I was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK in 1954 ... seems like only yesterday, but sadly, the passage of time can play tricks. Having said that ... and I am now sixty five, my passion for life and in particular creating images, remains undimmed. After a successful career as a commercial photographer, I am now concentrating on my own work with renewed vigour. We all need to re-calibrate every so often and I am now focussed on realising my own vision of the world ... free from restraints of others. During my professional career, I travelled widely and worked on behalf of many of the worlds leading brands. They included TWA, Sainsbury's. Barclays Bank, B & Q, Royal Bank of Canada, British Gas, 02, Yahoo and the Travel Corporation. I built long and lasting relationships with my clients because i was able to supply images that always went beyond the brief. My clients trusted me to go out on location, find the story and articulate their story in a way that was consistent and compelling. And now, I do that for myself. Although I still do travel, my main source of inspiration lies on my doorstep, close to home. I live close to the Savernake Forest, near Marlborough in the county of Wiltshire, UK. I call this place my spiritual home. It's a location that provides limitless inspiration and it never disappoints, no matter what season it is or how inclement the weather. And instead of supplying digital files to my clients, I am concentrating on my first love, which is print. I work closely with printer John Herlinger at the Fine Art Print Room in Corsham. He also frames my work and between us we have developed a printing and framing standard that perfectly compliments my images. As time goes on I will be adding new projects to my Saatchi online portfolio. Currently I am offering my work online in a print only format. But if you would like my artwork framed and ready to hang, please get in touch.
