About The Artwork

Inspired by the correspondence between Charles Darwin and JD Hooker in the 19th Century. Hooker was the Director of Kew Gardens 1865-1885 and brought back specimens of plants from around the world. He became Charles Darwin's closest friend and correspondent and they exchanged ideas regarding 'where do we come from'. Hooker became director of Kew Gardens where the photographs were taken by Nix to create the artwork. The impact of digital technology has transformed human expression. Nix uses traditional media and new digital media to create her work and explore new creative avenues made possible today. Plant explorers and the work of Anna Atkins, a botanist, who was the first who made cyanotype images of the flora she collected in the 19th Century, earning her place as a founding mother of photography. Marianne uses thick Saunders Waterford paper and paints the reactive chemicals onto it by hand. A transparency of a photograph (taken by Marianne) are then placed on the paper. The paper is exposed to sunlight, washed in water with added vinegar or lemon juice to deepen the blue colour and dried flat for a few days under heavy weights. Each exposure is unique, dependent on the weather, the day of year, the duration and time of day when exposed to sunlight. Marianne’s work is collected Internationally, selected for exhibition in the Mall Galleries (2012), Bankside Gallery (2015), the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2012,2013), The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (2016) and the V&A print collection, London.
