About The Artwork

I have always considered figure skating to the most graceful sport of the winter Olympics. To watch the skater’s refined movements can be hypnotizing and awe striking at the same time. I played hockey in my youth and know the strength one must have to truly control your entire body while moving at high speeds. I wanted the positions I placed the skaters in to be the strength of this kaleidoscope, not the colors, so I went for the all white wardrobe on the white ice. I added the gloves, masks and head dressings to bring focus to the eyes of the girls, leaving everything else in varying degrees of white. Like the other kaleidoscope productions it took almost six months to produce, shoot and assemble. There are always surprises when shooting a production like this, but the one on this shoot almost brought the shoot to a halt before we even started. One of the skaters did not show and did not give us advance warning. All of my sketch designs are with twelve people and now I had only eleven. I frantically began running through the halls of the building hoping to find another girl who might be available. Fortunately a very young girl was practicing her spins at the adjoining rink and she and her mother agreed to be a part of the shoot. She was about half the height of the rest of the team so I had to really think about where to place her. But she was perfect for the “Birthing” image. Her smile was contagious and soon we were all having great fun making images. The “Primary Dancers” Kaleidoscope series is one of four Kaleidoscopes I have completed since 2010. Each has its own personality and purpose, but all of them follow the same graphic guidelines and precision. The individual photos and nine-panel Kaleidoscopes shown on this site are a part of the 81 image Kaleidoscopes available at my website. I hope the collector of this image will feel the beauty of the interconnectivity that takes place between humans when they are determined to work and play as a team. www.hixphoto.com This image ©2011 Steve Hix Photography

For nearly five decades Steve Hix’s photographic path has evolved along with his subject matter. He began working in news and documentary photography in the late 1960’s, shooting anti-war protests for the Associated Press, Time and Newsweek. In 1974 he joined a very large commercial studio located in Kansas City where he learned many of the intricacies of studio lighting. In 1980 Steve started Steve Hix Photography where he expanded into location assignments in addition to operating a 4,000 square foot studio space in downtown KC. He grew his business quickly and his client list began to include major national corporate, fashion, product and advertising companies. He moved his operations to Austin, TX in 1983 where he focused on the top technological companies of the world. After working six days a week for two years straight Steve closed his studio in 1988 to travel around the world for a year to refresh his vision. He returned with over 150,000 stock photographs that still sell today. He opened a new studio upon his return in Kansas City, but began focusing on national and international location assignments. His business boomed and he was soon being featured in the top design and photography magazines in the world. His client list began to look like the “Who’s Who” list of the top corporations and advertising agencies in the world. In 1996 Steve moved his photography business to San Francisco where he continued to work on assignments worldwide. He won many national and international awards over the next decade as he photographed in over 70 countries on assignments. In 2001 he moved to Los Angeles to work with Corbis, where he began shooting very high end, production oriented stock photography. He left Corbis in 2004 to move back to Austin, TX where he started his own brand of stock specializing in the Hispanic lifestyle market. Over the next six years he built the brand, Somos, to become the highest quality Hispanic stock brand in the world. In 2010 he sold Somos to Bill Gates’ private company, Corbis Images, and moved to Colorado to continue his fine art career.
