Daylight Robbery 3 Photograph - Limited Edition of 40

This print is from a collection of images I photographed titled 'Daylight Robbery' I was inspired to document the blocked out windows visible in many of the old buildings in London after taking a walking tour in Hampstead. The story is, that in 1698 King William III introduced the infamous Window tax which ran for almost 150 years taxing houses with more than ten windows. Many houses bricked up their windows to reduce the amount of tax they had to pay and the blocked up windows are still prevalent in England today. It is believed the expression ‘Daylight Robbery’ was stemmed this tax, however, this is disputed. I love how this quirky part of history from so long ago is still visually represented today in London’s architecture. The series is primarily captured under the soft English light in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea where many of the buildings are painted white.
