Andy Jon Morris (b.1976) is a lens-based visual artist whose atmospheric works deal with themes of memory, solitude and hope. Travelling extensively by motorbike across the world during his formative years, Andy became enamored by the romance of the road and the allure of the horizon. It is due to this experience that his practice was destined to be in the realm of landscape. Abandoning objectivity, he examines the harmonious relationship between an outward and inward journey, thereby creating a transitional space for contemplation. “I am drawn to mystery, uncertainty, the intangible. Where nothing is assumed and everything is possible, this is where the beauty lies for me. I’m always looking for an escape from everyday realities. My work allows my mind to rise above and wander with complete freedom, and this is something that I cherish.” The self-taught artist utilised lens blur in his first series Reverie which dealt with the channelling of memories. From there he has moved to what could be termed digital collage, whereby images from scanned film negatives are layered together to form a single artwork. This process relies on altering the transparency of each individual layer, comparable to a painter thinning out paint so that layers underneath are visible. Morris photographs all his images on medium format film, prizing the inherent graininess and tonal softness which lends more texture and gentler transitions to his works Born in England, raised in Australia, Andy started as a commercial photographer in Sydney and pursued artistic projects in parallel. He currently resides in Hossegor, France, and works solely as an artist.
